What is the Ecocanvas for?

The main function of the Ecocanvas methodology is to structure and guide the process of design, prototyping and validation of a circular business model, taking advantage of the support of the templates and the training material available online. This design process is often complex and chaotic because it requires addressing multiple issues in parallel that are interconnected with each other. Templates and methodological guidelines help organize ideas, generate new hypotheses and fundamental conversations for the maturation of the circular business idea.

The advantage of ordering ideas with criteria and generating more points of shared reflection between the entrepreneur and his mentor, for example, or within the team promoting the idea, has to do with better fitting the different elements that make up the business. These elements are nothing more than the Ecocanvas blocks, which need to be adjusted to create a model that works and is solid.

More than 15 tools in 5 phases

The Ecocanvas methodology is based on the block-by-block construction of a business model prototype. The 15 tools (+1 for orientation) are complemented to support the entrepreneur or businessperson who wants to rethink their project or offer of products and services within the paradigm of the Circular Economy.

Depending on the needs of your company, you can modulate the tools that best serve you, let’s see some examples:

Fledgling idea for initial validation
If the idea is still “green” – pun intended .. – a quick sketch of #Ecocanvas version 0 is made first. Quickly answering the questions and filling in the blocks. Subsequently, the block that involved the most effort or another on which it is considered important to deepen is evaluated. To return later to #Ecocanvas and “correct” the blocks with their new version 1, 2 etc. What arises from the different blocks can help us in the writing of the business plans once we have validated the hypotheses.

Elaborate idea for review / improvement
If the idea is solid and we have been turning and validating them for some time, the Ecocanvas can be left aside in principle to go directly to certain specific tools according to the needs. Although it is always convenient to make the transition from the conventional Canvas to #Ecocanvas because that way it will be easier to understand where the question to be resolved is and thus have a more authentic orientation of where to go.

Established business for transformation
If the company is already working, it is convenient to start with the development of a version 1 of #Ecocanvas to see what aspects need to be improved and to have an overview of the current situation. After this overview, you can focus on the different tools depending on what you perceive to be most important.

The tools are self-explanatory, intuitive, and easy to use. You can use them right now!

ecocanvas 100 online

100% adapted to the digital environment

We love personal contact, especially in workshops. However, we have understood the importance that the entire process and the different tools can be worked on, not only in a face-to-face format, but also in a hybrid and 100% online format, taking advantage of its virtues in cost savings and efficiency. How? thanks to powerful digital technologies and collaborative platforms such as MIRO, Google APPs and Classroom, towards which we have successfully transferred the tools and mentoring processes.

"The Circular Economy is not waste management, but the much more ambitious search for new economic mechanisms that create social value, regenerate natural capital and preserve the planet's living ecosystems."

About Ecocanvas

Ecocanvas was born in 2012, as a methodological response to the lack of connection between business and sustainability. It was born as a unique and simple tool to broaden the perspective and help entrepreneurs and companies to improve their environmental performance.

The launch of the first version of Ecocanvas generates interest around the world, especially in the Spanish-speaking world due to the business activity of its creator Nicola Cerantola, who from Spain is promoting the tool and its dissemination.

In 2015-2016 its development was resumed with force to include it as a tool in the E + Green Mentor project as a fundamental element of the methodology to help mentors in their work to support green and circular entrepreneurs. Used during the project (duration 24 months) in Spain, Ireland, Hungary, Austria, it is the main tool in mentoring workshops with more than 120 professionals from the sector, entrepreneurs and companies. The Ecocanvas is also used in a workshop within the IBM + project with more than 20 companies.

Between 2017 and 2020, with the demand for specific workshops for the Circularization of projects and training, it was subsequently developed and used in various workshops for companies and institutions in cities such as Madrid, Bilbao, Murcia, Seville, Malaga, Valencia, etc. in Spain and internationally in Buenos Aires (Argentina), Montevideo (Uruguay), Guayaquil (Ecuador), Santurce (Puerto Rico, USA), Kuala Lumpur (Malaysia) and Zahlé (Lebanon) for the wine sector among other cities.

At an academic level, work has been carried out since its launch in prestigious business schools and universities in Spain such as EOI, IED Madrid, Universidad Pontificia Comillas, Universidad Politécnica de Madrid, Universidad Francisco de Vitoria, Universidad de la Laguna and LATAM such as Universidad Pontificia Bolivariana, el Pascual Bravo University Institute, the University of Monterrey, ESPOL, training hundreds of students and entrepreneurs. Currently, its development continues to advance and new tools have been added to the list to continue improving the way in which businesses are designed within a Circular Economy.

It is worth highlighting its present development within the Interreg-Med EMBRACE project (EMBRACE Eco-Mediterranean Business Reinforcing Agro Circular Economy) that between 2018 and 2020 has incorporated Ecocanvas as a key methodology for circularization in the Agro-food sector.
